Medical Waste Management

Veolia provides comprehensive medical waste management services, including the disposal, identification, and collection of medical waste considered a biohazard.

Medical waste is generated by medical and healthcare clients, including hospitals, clinics, dentists, pathologists, veterinary hospitals, and research facilities.

Medical waste is any solid waste that is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of humans or animals. This includes used needles, soiled bandages, used surgical gloves, surgical instruments, body parts, body fluid samples, blood, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and radioactive materials.

Medical waste is considered a biohazard and therefore it is important to handle with care, to minimise risk to people's health or the environment.

How do we handle medical waste?

Veolia provides integrated solutions for the identification, collection, transportation, sterilization or disposal of medical waste. Our fast and compliant solutions and highly trained and experienced personnel, means you can trust that your medical waste is being managed safely and comprehensively.

Our specialised colour coded and clearly labelled bins and containers for medical, clinical, cytotoxic, sharps and pharmaceutical waste allows for waste segregation on-site hey are delivered clean and lined and treated according to EPA standards.

Our range of bins and containers have lockable lids to prevent removal or spillage of contents and ensure safe handling of hazardous waste for medical staff and during transportation and disposal.

Our network of waste fleet ensures we collect and dispose your medical waste in a safe and compliant manner. Our team provides tracking and documentation to ensure compliance with all regulations.

If the waste materials cannot be reused, the waste stream is taken to our thermal destruction facility and processed through an automatically controlled waste feed that ensures efficient combustion and complete destruction.  The waste is exposed to a chamber temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius, and the emissions are controlled to surpass European Standards, which exceed current Australian standards.

If materials can be reused, which is the case for equipment that can be sterilised, e.g. medical supplies, these are taken to an autoclave facility.
