Veolia can collect, treat and dispose all items that are packaged in materials that are different from what is contained within.
Common packaging materials include glass, metals, plastics and wood, and we ensure the transport method matches the volume as well as the waste streams found, which can sometimes be hazardous. Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) and metallic and mercury wastes tend to be common in industrial packaged waste.
Does Veolia have the technology to automatically depackage packaged streams?
Yes, but the use of this equipment is highly dependent on the waste stream.
We have solutions such as the Ecrusor, which can de-package the waste, if the materials contained within are organic e.g. food waste.
A compact and robust process, Ecrusor de-packs food waste from its packaging in order to extract the organic material. Inert waste packaging material is sent one direction; energy-rich organic material is macerated and sent another.
This Veolia-patented process can then create a mixture of liquid and solid organics that can go through an anaerobic digester to produce biogas, which can then be converted into energy for use or for sale back to the grid.
As for hazardous waste streams such as NORMs and metallic and mercury wastes, the equipment is chosen on a case-by-case basis since it is highly dependent on the volume, disposal facilities nearby and more.
Why choose Veolia for packaged waste treatment?
In addition to the technologies and our regular fleet, we have a number of custom-built controlled flatbed waste trucks, and bulk tankers which are licenced for transport of hazardous materials that may be found in packaged wastes.
We also operate a number of handling and transfer stations, where we determine the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly waste treatment, disposal or recycling options available in the market for packaged waste.
