Safe, compliant management of sludge and slurry waste

Sludge and slurry are common by-products of wastewater treatment, industrial processes, storage and separation systems. Over time, these materials need to be removed and managed appropriately to maintain site operations, meet environmental obligations and prevent waste from accumulating beyond available storage capacity.

The composition of sludge can vary significantly. It may contain organic material, oils, sediment, process residues or other contaminants, and this determines how the waste needs to be classified, transported and treated.

We provide sludge and slurry waste management services across Australia, combining collection and transport with access to licensed liquid waste treatment facilities and a range of treatment and recovery options.

How Does Veolia Manage Sludge and Slurry Waste?

We provide an end-to-end service for sludge and slurry that is ready for collection from tanks, pits, sumps, containers and other accessible storage points.

  1. Before collection, the waste stream can be assessed to determine its characteristics, appropriate transport requirements and suitable treatment pathway. Where classification or analysis is required, our team can help establish what is needed before the material is transported.
  2. Sludge can be collected using our specialist waste fleet, including vacuum tankers for pumpable bulk waste and appropriate vehicles for other materials. Collection can be arranged as part of a scheduled waste management programme or in response to changing site requirements.
  3. Once collected, the material is transported to an appropriate licensed treatment facility. The treatment process will depend on the composition, contamination and recoverability of the waste.
  4. Treatment options may include dewatering to separate liquids from solids and reduce waste volume. Oil and water separation can be used where recoverable hydrocarbons are present, while suitable material may be directed towards beneficial reuse or recovery pathways. Waste that cannot be recovered is treated or disposed of through an appropriately licensed pathway.
  5. We can also provide the relevant waste tracking and transport documentation to support environmental and regulatory obligations. Veolia’s broader liquid waste service is built around licensed collection, treatment and documented waste movements.

What waste streams do we manage?

Depending on the waste stream and site requirements, we can manage:

  • Wastewater and sewage treatment sludge
  • Industrial process sludge and slurry
  • Oily sludge and separator waste
  • Tank, pit and sump residues
  • Filter cake and process residues
  • Grit, screenings and grease-derived sludge
  • Contaminated and regulated sludge streams
  • Biosolids and suitable organic sludge

Why choose Veolia?

Effective sludge management involves considerably more than transporting material away from site. The waste needs to be correctly understood, matched to an appropriate vehicle, transported in accordance with regulatory requirements and directed to a facility capable of treating or receiving it.

We bring these stages together through an integrated waste management network. Our technical specialists, collection fleet and treatment capabilities allow us to manage the waste lifecycle through one provider, reducing the complexity of coordinating multiple contractors while maintaining a clear chain of responsibility.

Where possible, we also look beyond disposal and identify opportunities to recover resources or reduce the volume of material requiring final disposal.

Sludge is a semi-solid residue produced by wastewater treatment, industrial processes or the settling of solids from a liquid waste stream.

Slurry generally contains a higher proportion of liquid and remains more readily pumpable. The correct collection and treatment method will depend on the material’s composition, consistency and contamination.

The waste needs to be appropriately classified before it can be transported and treated, but you do not necessarily need to determine this yourself.

Veolia can help assess the waste stream and arrange sampling or analysis where required to determine an appropriate management pathway.

In many cases, yes.

Different sludge consistencies require different equipment. Information about the material, volume, storage method and site access allows Veolia to determine the most appropriate collection method before attending the site.

The waste is transported to an appropriate licensed facility and directed to a treatment pathway based on its characteristics.

This may include dewatering, separation, conditioning, resource recovery or other forms of treatment. Where a recovery pathway is not suitable, the residual waste is directed to an appropriately licensed disposal option.

Sludge management generally covers waste that is already accessible for collection and requires transport, treatment, recovery or disposal.

Industrial sludge removal involves physically extracting accumulated sludge from tanks, ponds or other operating assets before it can be transported away. Customers requiring this type of work should refer to Veolia’s Industrial Sludge Removal service.

Yes. Dewatering can form part of sludge treatment by separating water from solids and reducing the volume and weight of material requiring further treatment or disposal.

Where the primary requirement is the desludging and dewatering of wastewater infrastructure such as lagoons, tanks, channels or inlet structures, Veolia also provides a dedicated Dewatering & Desludging service.
