Septic Tank Cleaning for Homes, Businesses & Rural Property

A septic tank only works while there is room in it for wastewater to separate. Once the sludge layer at the base and the scum layer on top build up far enough, solids start carrying through to the outlet and into the disposal field, where they cause blockages, surface ponding and odour that are expensive to put right.

Veolia pumps out septic tanks, sullage pits and on-site wastewater systems across Australia, on a scheduled cycle or as an emergency call-out. Every collection is carried out under our EPA transport licences and documented, so you have a record of where the waste went and how it was treated.

What is Septic Waste?

Septic waste is the accumulated contents of an on-site wastewater system serving a property that is not connected to mains sewer. It separates into three layers: a scum layer of fats and light solids at the surface, a liquid effluent layer in the middle, and a sludge layer of settled solids at the base. Only the effluent layer is designed to leave the tank.

Sullage, sometimes called greywater, is the separate stream from showers, basins, laundries and kitchens where a property splits its wastewater. It contains detergents, fats and food solids, and in many systems it is held in its own pit that needs pumping out on its own cycle.

Both streams are classified and regulated as liquid waste. They must be removed by a licensed transporter and taken to a licensed receiving facility, not discharged to ground or stormwater.

Learn More About Our Septic Waste Services

Our specialist waste teams are experienced across a range of tank cleaning services to ensure we can comprehensively manage both scheduled and emergency service requests.

Once collected septic waste is transported by the appropriate tanker to a Veolia licensed liquid waste treatment facility. There it is screened to remove rags and grit, then separated into a solids fraction and a liquid fraction. The solids are dewatered and processed for recovery where the material allows, and the liquid is treated to the standard required before being discharged to trade waste.

Scheduled Septic Tank Cleaning & Pump-out

A standing collection cycle set to your tank size, occupancy and usage pattern, so the tank never reaches the point where solids carry over. We hold the schedule and prompt you, rather than leaving you to remember it.

Emergency & Blocked Tank Response

Surcharging tanks, backed-up fixtures and effluent surfacing in the disposal field are treated as priority call-outs. Our tankers carry jetting capability where access allows, so a blocked outlet can often be cleared at the same visit.

Sullage & Greywater Pit Removal

Collection from separate sullage pits and greywater holding tanks, including properties on split systems where the two streams are pumped at different intervals.

Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS)

Desludging of AWTS units, which need the sludge drawn off before it displaces the aeration chamber and degrades effluent quality. We work around the unit's service schedule rather than against it.

Holding Tanks, Amenities & Temp Facilities

Pump-outs for construction site amenities, event facilities, caravan parks, remote camps and other locations running on holding tanks rather than a treatment system.

Cost depends on tank capacity, access for the tanker, your location and how far the load has to travel to a licensed receiving facility. Because those variables move the price, we quote individually rather than publishing a flat rate. Contact us with your tank size and address for a firm figure.

For a typical household on a conventional septic system, every three to five years is the usual interval. The right cycle for your property depends on tank capacity, how many people use it, whether a garbage disposal unit discharges into it, and whether sullage is separated out.

  • A small tank serving a large household may need pumping annually.
  • Aerated systems generally need desludging every two to three years, and more often if the unit is undersized for the occupancy.
  • Commercial premises, caravan parks and camps usually run on a monthly or quarterly cycle.
  • Holding tanks with no treatment stage are pumped on volume, not on time.

If effluent is surfacing, fixtures are draining slowly, or there is odour around the tank or disposal area, the tank needs attention now rather than at the next scheduled visit.

Wet wipes, sanitary products, nappies, cooking fats, paints, solvents and bleach in volume. Wipes and fats are the two most common causes of premature pump-outs and blocked outlets, because neither breaks down in the tank.

In most cases yes, but heavy ground saturation can make a property inaccessible for a loaded tanker without causing damage to the surface. If conditions are marginal we will discuss it with you rather than risk the ground.

Yes. Documentation is issued for every collection in the format the relevant state or territory EPA requires.
