As of 1 July 2017, 13 northern and southern Sydney councils are sending their general waste, otherwise known as red bin waste, to Veolia’s Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facility located within our Woodlawn Eco-precinct near Goulburn, NSW, for additional landfill diversion.
Which Sydney councils have signed up?
The councils affected are:
- Ashfield and Leichhardt
- Burwood
- Kogarah (Georges River Council)
- Botany and Rockdale (now Bayside Council)
- Waverly
- Woollahra
- Ku-ring-gai
- Willoughby
- North Sydney
- Lane Cove
- Hunters Hill.
What does this new facility do?
Ths multimillion-dollar facility utilises resource recovery technologies from around the world to extract organic content from mixed waste streams. From this organic material, a high quality compost is produced which is then used to rehabilitate the Woodlawn site, previously used for mining.
Do you have to change your waste behaviour if you belong to one of the Sydney councils mentioned?
Yes, to ensure smooth operations, Veolia and the councils are working together to clarify source segregation rules for all affected residents, bearing in mind collaborative effort is key in creating environmental, financial and social change. Thus, we would like to encourage all residents to follow the the guidelines below:
- No hazardous materials such as gas cylinders, batteries, chemicals and paint
- No ropes, cables, strings or hoses longer than one metre
- No hot ashes
- No car parts or batteries.
