Australia’s pioneering energy recovery facility, in Kwinana, Western Australia, has received its first delivery of waste to the site, marking a key milestone for the project as it nears completion.
The plant, which is owned by Acciona, will be operated and maintained by Veolia which has extensive experience operating 65 similar facilities around the world.
Veolia’s Chief Operating Officer - Resource Recovery Craig Barker who was onsite when Veolia delivered the first waste to the Kwinana facility explained that the delivery was the latest in a series of important milestones in the commissioning process as opening date drew closer.
“Our team has been a part of the commissioning process activities and testing. The first fire on gas occurred just last month, which is a testament to Acciona’s focus that has seen it reach this point,” Mr Barker said.
“The successful delivery of this waste highlights that the project is on track and local councils will soon be sending their waste to be converted into sustainable energy. Veolia looks forward to being a part of its future success.”
Once fully operational, Kwinana will convert 460,000 tonnes of residential waste every year, which would otherwise be sent to landfill, into 38 megawatts of baseload power ― enough to power approximately 50,000 WA households and businesses.
