**Overview**  
For 16 years, Veolia have been providing full scope 3 Waters O&M services to communities in the Queenstown Lakes District. Operating in an international destination of great natural beauty, we deliver a high standard of service in a geographically constrained area with a high peaking population.

**Duration**  
Veolia have provided these services to QLDC since 2008 through contract extensions

## Feasibility Study for Black Soldier Fly Larvae Bioconversion



 

 

 



**Overview**

Veolia, in collaboration with Plant and Food Research (The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited) and Massey University, and with co-funding from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries, undertook a comprehensive feasibility study to explore the potential of large-scale Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) production in Aotearoa.

**Duration**

The study spanned over two years, from late 2022 through to early 2025, allowing for a thorough investigation of technical, environmental, and commercial factors.

**Location**

The feasibility study was conducted in Palmerston North, located in the Manawatū region of New Zealand. This site was selected due to its strategic location, proximity to research institutions, and relevance to regional waste and agricultural dynamics.

**Outcome and benefits**

This study aimed to assess the viability of using BSFL bioconversion as an innovative and sustainable method for organic waste management and as a source of alternative protein. The project sought to align environmental stewardship with the development of a circular bioeconomy, addressing both waste reduction and future food system resilience. The project was led by Veolia in partnership with Plant and Food Research and Massey University. It was co-funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries, reflecting strong support from both the public and private sectors for advancing sustainable technologies in New Zealand.



 

 

 



 

 

 

 





 

 

 

 





## Whanganui District Council

**Overview**

Veolia has provided 3 Waters Network Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services to the predominantly urban communities of Whanganui since 2012.

**Duration**

Veolia has provided these services to the Whanganui District Council (WDC) since 2012 through contract extensions awarded for performance and overall value, as well as through a competitive retender. The current contract is due to expire in June 2026. Location Whanganui District

**Outcome and benefits**

Veolia has maintained high levels of responsiveness and customer satisfaction, as well as supporting WDC with asset condition inspections to inform targeted investment decisions.
