## What is liquid waste management?

Liquid waste management is the collection, transportation, treatment, and compliant disposal of waste in liquid or semi-liquid form. This includes everything from household septic effluent to industrial chemical by-products, grease trap waste, sludge, and classified hazardous liquid waste.

It's crucial to note that liquid waste cannot be disposed of in the general waste stream and is governed by regulatory compliance. In Australia, liquid waste is regulated by state and territory Environment Protection Authorities (EPAs). Businesses and residents must use a licensed liquid waste transporter, and all waste movements must be documented in accordance with applicable state EPA requirements. Failure to comply can result in significant penalties.

At Veolia, we're proud to be one of Australia's most experienced liquid waste management providers. We hold all required EPA licences across every state we operate in, run a network of licensed treatment facilities, and manage the full waste lifecycle - from collection at your site through to treatment and compliant disposal.

### How do we handle liquid waste?

### Why choose Veolia for your liquid waste handling?

Veolia has spent decades managing liquid waste for clients across Australia, building the infrastructure, licensing, and operational know how that most providers simply can't match.

Every part of our operation is fully EPA licensed and is backed by a nationwide network that services both metropolitan and regional customers. When you work with Veolia, you get a single provider handling **collection, transport, treatment, and full compliance documentation**, including waste tracking certificates and transfer records, so your audit trail is never in question.

Our modern specialist fleet, including combination jetter/vacuum vehicles, is built for complex jobs, and our 24/7 emergency response means liquid waste incidents are handled the moment they arise - not when business hours allow.

Beyond compliance, we take a resource recovery approach wherever possible, treating and reusing waste streams to reduce landfill impact and support a more sustainable outcome for every job we handle.

### What types of liquid waste does Veolia collect?

Veolia collects all EPA-classified liquid wastes including septic waste, sullage, sludge, sewage (K130), industrial effluents (J100, J120, N140), grease trap waste, waste oils, hydrocarbons, solvents, acids, and contaminated groundwater. We service both domestic and commercial/industrial customers across Australia.

### Do I need a liquid waste tracking certificate?

Yes. Under Australian state EPA regulations, all scheduled liquid waste must be transported with a waste tracking certificate or equivalent state documentation. The generator, transporter, and receiver all hold responsibilities. As your licensed transporter and treatment provider, Veolia manages the required waste tracking documentation and provides you with copies for your compliance records.

### How often should I have my septic tank pumped out?

Most residential septic tanks require pump-out every three to five years, depending on household size and usage. Commercial septic systems and high-use facilities may require more frequent servicing. We recommend a condition assessment if your system hasn't been serviced recently, particularly before any property sale or development.

### What is sullage and does it need to be removed?

Sullage is grey water - wastewater from sinks, showers, baths, laundry, and kitchens (not toilet waste). In unsewered areas, sullage must be collected and disposed of compliantly under relevant state EPA guidelines. Veolia provides scheduled and on-demand sullage collection for residential, commercial, and temporary site applications.

### Is sludge the same as sewage?

No. Sewage (EPA classification K130) is wastewater containing human excrement from toilets. Sludge is a semi-solid residue produced by industrial or wastewater treatment processes - it typically contains solids, oils, and other materials that have settled out of liquid streams. Both require licensed management, and Veolia treats both across our licensed treatment facility network.

### What areas does Veolia's liquid waste service cover?

Veolia provides liquid waste management services across Australia. Our treatment facilities - including sites in New South Wales such as St Marys and Arndell Park - support broad national coverage. Contact us to confirm service availability for your location and arrange a quote.

### Can Veolia handle emergency liquid waste jobs?

Yes. We provide 24-hour emergency response for septic overflows, sludge spills, blocked drains, and other urgent liquid waste situations. Call our emergency line to speak directly with our operations team - we'll confirm response time and dispatch a vehicle as quickly as possible
