## What is Decarbonisation?

**Decarbonisation** is the process of reducing the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), and other greenhouse gases associated with climate change, that are released into and damage the environment.

### How Can We Achieve Decarbonisation?

There are different ways to achieve decarbonisation, including:

- Minimising the release of CO2 into the atmosphere:
    - Using cleaner energy by transitioning to renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydro, etc.) and relying less on fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas).
    - Reducing your energy consumption by using energy efficient appliances, installing LED lights and better insulation, or simply being more conscious of your energy usage.
    - Moving towards a **circular economy** will reduce the amount of emissions that are released during the manufacturing process of new products and from the waste generated when products are disposed.
- Capturing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it
    - New technologies can filter carbon from industrial site emissions, which can then be stored in more environmentally-friendly ways.
    - Sequestration occurs naturally in the environment, and we can improve this organic process through reforestation and protection of habitats.
